An ordinary Japanese man who turns into a local celebrity in Mexico City

December 11th, 2008

“I don’t understand why I’m here”, Hiroshi Nohara uttered through a visiting interpreter hired by a television station. “I don’t have reason”, he added.

Hiroshi Nohara is a Japanese man and he is on a layover at the Mexico airport. This native from Tokyo flew into Mexico bringing with him a tourist visa and a return ticket home. His stay lasted almost three months and he has no plans to leave for reasons he can’t explain. He has been in Terminal 1 of the Benito Juarez International Airport since Sept 2. Through the donations of fastfood restaurants and passengers and at the same time sleeping on chair, he survived in his stay. Strangers often buy him either pastries or hamburgers but he prefers the last one.

Nohara is given free snacks and drinks by the various stalls in the food court and sometimes throw in hats or coffee mugs with store logos to avail free publicity during his frequent appearances in television.

The airport authorities asked the help of the Japanese Embassy to determine what is really the main reason why he doesn’t want to leave the place. The embassy can’t drive him away since he has a valid visa and Mexican officials have nothing to do but to wait for its expiration in early March.

At first, this foul-smelling man normally frightened passengers but now he’s considered a kind of celebrity. He is normally featured in nearly daily television news reports about his life at the food court.

Whenever tourists saw him, they usually pose with him to have some photographs or get an autograph.

He said in an interview Thursday alongside the airport McDonald’s that he had no reason for having an extended stay and likewise doesn’t know how long he’ll stay in the airport.

In his stay, the Japanese man’s appearance has changed. His wiry goatee has grown into a scraggly mass and his red-tinted hair is now dotted with dust and dandruff. His cream-colored jacket and fleece blanket look dingy due to overuse. His smell is foul just like he hasn’t had take a bath in months.

According to an airport janitor in the person of Silvia Navarrete del Toro, “He’s a calm person, a nice man. He just sits here and eats all day.”

He’s talking and laughing for hours while sitting with the interpreter, at a small table with cups of cold coffee, packets of ketchup and sandwiches wrapped in foil.

Nohara acknowledged the similarities of his life to the 2004 film “The Terminal”, starring Tom Hanks who played as an Eastern European man stuck in a New York City airport, but it is not his inspiration.

“My life”, he joked, “is The Terminal 2.”
