The Tchimpounga Sanctuary is situated 40 kilometres north of Pointe
Noire in the Congo Republic.Having over 100 orphaned chimpanzees,
making Tchimpounga Sanctuary the largest of its kind in Africa. The
chimpanzees come from Congo-Zaire and Gabon, as well as the
Congo-Brazzaville region. A large area of forest and grassy space
surrounds the main holding facility, which is enclosed by an electric
fence. This open space allows the chimpanzees to be viewed by local
people and ecotourists, without too much human-chimp interaction
occurring.
